# Directions:

01 - Line a 9x9-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease the surface.
02 - Divide marshmallows and butter into three equal portions, approximately 3.33 cups marshmallows and 1 tablespoon butter for each colored layer.
03 - Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Add 3.33 cups marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Stir in red gel food coloring to achieve desired shade. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and mix until evenly coated. Press mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
04 - Wipe saucepan clean and melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3.33 cups marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla extract. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and mix until coated. Gently press mixture over the red layer.
05 - Wipe saucepan clean and melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add remaining marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in blue gel food coloring. Add remaining 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and mix until coated. Gently press over the white layer.
06 - Sprinkle red, white, and blue sprinkles over the top while the mixture is still slightly warm, if desired.
07 - Allow treats to cool and set for at least 1 hour at room temperature. Lift from pan using parchment paper as handle, slice into 16 equal squares, and serve.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • They're ridiculously simple to make but look like you spent hours on them, which is honestly the best kind of cooking magic.
  • The layers stay distinct and beautiful because you're building them intentionally, and kids (and adults pretending to be kids) go absolutely wild for the patriotic presentation.
02 -
  • Never skip wiping out the saucepan between layers, or you'll end up with muddy, blended colors instead of crisp red, white, and blue stripes.
  • Gel food coloring is non-negotiable here—I learned the hard way that liquid coloring turns everything into a sticky mess because the extra moisture prevents proper setting.
03 -
  • Lightly grease your hands or spatula with a tiny bit of butter before pressing each layer—it makes the job infinitely less frustrating and keeps your hands from turning into sticky cereal magnets.
  • Don't be tempted to skip the full hour of cooling time; treats that sit undisturbed set properly, while ones you slice into too early fall apart and lose their perfect stratified look.
